STEAMBOAT ERA MUSEUM

Our museum is focused on PRESERVING and SHARING the heritage of the Steamboat Era

Education

The Steamboat Era Museum is dedicated to offering exceptional experiences for every visitor. In addition to our world-class exhibits, we also provide educational programming ranging from lectures to children's programs. Check out our upcoming events to see what is happening at the Museum.

Research

The Museum has a large and diverse collection of artifacts and books relating to the Steamboat Era. From original documents to the Potomac Pilothouse, researchers are sure to find something of value upon visiting the Steamboat Era Museum.

Preservation

We are committed to preserving the heritage of the Steamboat Era Museum. Beginning in 2018, we restored the original Potomac Pilothouse which can now be viewed inside the museum. The Pilothouse is the largest surviving artifact from the hundreds of Chesapeake Bay steamboats that once dotted our local waters.

MEET OUR TEAM

Passionately committed to preserving the history of the Steamboat Era

Director

Gus Kasper came aboard the Steamboat Era Museum in 2023 as Executive Director. Gus has worked in small museums since he was a Sophomore in highschool, first becoming a docent for the King William Historical Society in 2016. After graduating from the University of Mary Washington in 2022 with a degree in History, he became Executive Director of the Fauquier History Museum. Having written on the subject in his college thesis, Gus is excited to continue helping to educate the public about Chesapeake Bay Steamboats.

Museum Manager

After retiring from a long career in the medical field, Candee Pevahouse moved to Irvington in 2015 and began volunteering at the Steamboat Era Museum the following year. As Museum Manager, she continues to help the Steamboat Era Museum pursue its mission of preserving and sharing the history of the Steamboat Era. Candee is very active in her local community, and adores following the antics of their two cats – Ginger and Gryphon.

Membership Chair

With a background in Mathematics and Actuarial Science, Linda “Lin” Ross was a natural choice to join the museum in 2015 as database administrator/membership chair. She volunteers weekly to maintain the member/donor database and generate regular mailings. She also volunteers for desk coverage, Crab Festival, and other special events. Lin is an avid Steelers fan, plays in 8-ball and 9-ball leagues and tournaments, and loves playing Mahjongg.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Steamboat Era Museum. With diverse backgrounds, each Board member is an active member of the museum and provides important and valuable insights and services to help keep the Steamboat Era Museum steaming along.
